History
Discovery
Around 1935 whetstone miners prospected central Arkansas for hard novaculite and discovered a less cemented variety called Tripoli, a white microcrystalline silica powder. This special mineral was found on the property of Clem Strauss, an owner of the Malvern Lumber Company.
Founding
In 1947, this visionary group saw a future for Tripoli, founded the Malvern Minerals Company, and began marketing Novacite®, from the Latin root novacula (meaning “razor hone”). The group recruited Hew Harlow, Mr. Strauss’ son-in-law, to lead the growth of the company.
Growth
Under Mr. Harlow’s oversight, two more deposits were opened to assure an on-going supply. The product and customer base was further expanded in the 1970s when Malvern Minerals began surface treating raw materials (Novakup®, Multikup®, etc.).
Rebirth
In 2006, Brad Smith and Tony McAnly assumed control of Malvern Minerals and restructured it’s operations. Under their leadership, production reliability has greatly improved and capacity increased. Toll services have expanded from treating to include grinding, blending, packaging, and logistics.
Future
With production capacity tripled, a 98+% on-time delivery performance, and over 80+ years of ore reserves, Malvern Minerals offers its customers a bright future of service.
